How to match your make up with your outfit

Guest post by Special K!

Hello ladies!
First of all, don’t worry…you’re in the right place! Nookie’s away for the holidays and she asked me to guest write this post. While she’s walking with her bare feet in the sand and bathing in the warm waves, you’re stuck with me.

Back to the serious stuff, she said I could write about anything, whether it’s fashion or beauty related. Seeing how this is a fashion blog and that’s what you came here looking for, I thought I would combine the two and talk about matching up your make-up with your outfit.

So do you ever think about it? Is it a must, a definite no-no, or an easy getaway from time to time? Most experts say that matching up your outfit and your make up is imperative today, but I think it depends on the outfit you’re wearing, the occasion and your personality.
Now, let’s take some examples. We all know that statement prints & colors are hot right now. So if, let’s say, you’re wearing this graphic print dress, would you do your eye make-up blue or green? I don’t think so! My advice is to choose the darkest shade for the eye make-up and lightest for the cheeks and lips. For instance, you should wear a burgundy make-up with light pink as a highlight, a shell/pink blush and a nude or soft pink lip-gloss.

For the second example, you’re wearing this dress. What are you going to do now? Go for a black & white eye make-up? Hmm, I’m not feeling it. My suggestion is a classic winged-eyeliner look with bright lips. Reds and corals are really in this season.

For the third attempt, you’ve chosen a solid color dress, like this one. Experts say you have to choose a color from the same shade as the dress, for example champagne, peach, coral, apricot on your eye-lids, sangria, burgundy etc. in your crease and light peach lips & cheeks. I think that’s a cute choice but in my personal opinion, why not choose a complementary color? I think a subtle turquoise e/s would have gone wonderfully.

Let’s talk about this stunning blue dress for a minute. See how she has coppery eyes? I think a bit more of a golden look would have looked even more flattering on her.

Now, take a look at the combo here, the other way around, golden piece and blue make-up.

So, what have we learned from this? We shouldn’t play “matchy-matchy” as Byron Barnes, cosmetics expert and creative director of IMAN Cosmetics puts it, to the extreme but softly coordinate our tones.
So, now that you know the proper way to do it, what are your thoughts on it? I must admit, being more of a beauty whore, I would likely put more emphasis on my make-up, do the make up first and after that, choose my outfit.

Hope this article will be helpful for you in the future.
