How to Dress for a Cocktail Party

A cocktail party is the perfect, sophisticated way to get together with your friends, colleagues, or family. Everyone loves a cocktail party and a good excuse to get dressed up! Every cocktail party will have a slightly different vibe, so knowing what to wear in each situation is key to being best dressed. There are some clues you can read to find out what the best options are for you!

Look for Context Clues

While the words “cocktail party” scrolled across the front of an invitation is a pretty generic clue as to what to wear, you can read into the event details to find more what style the party will be. The event’s purpose, time, and place are great clues as to what you should wear.

A swanky downtown hotel obviously calls for a fancier dress than a party at someone’s home. The hours of the party will tell you a lot too since, most very formal parties happen in the evening while more casual vibes ones occur in the afternoon.

Think of the Host

If your host is old fashioned and has traditional values, you can count on dressing more conservatively than you would if your host were eccentric and artsy. When in doubt ask the host! They usually already have an idea in mind of how they want the style of the party to go, and will have no problem giving you some direction!

Dress for the Season

To make sure you are comfortable and don’t feel out of place, your cocktail dress should be appropriate for the season. Colorful florals or strappy open-toed shoes are fabulous for a spring fling, but a winter soiree calls for long sleeved cocktail dresses and maybe even a coat. Faux fur is always very glamorous in the winter months, and if the party is around the holidays, you can totally get away with glitter or something else festive

Less is More

When in doubt, less is more. Dressing down doesn’t mean have to mean dressing casual. You can be totally elegant without being too extra, and you won’t risk looking out of place either. Jewelry is a great way to make a simple dress pop!  And when talking about handbags, pick something small that holds all of your essentials. A handheld clutch or chic top-handle is perfect. Cocktail parties are meant to be sophisticated and minimalist, so leave your big tote bag at home.

Put Your Best Face Forward

In keeping with the minimalist theme, light foundation, a pop of blush, and a pass at some mascara are essential, but you can decide what else to use based how fancy you are trying to get. Lipstick has transformational powers, and a modest updo is perfect for your hair.

Comfort Is Key

Always consider your comfort level. Parties are about socializing, and while you want to be stylish, you don’t want to be so uncomfortable that you can’t enjoy it. If you can’t be at ease in the ensemble you choose, rethink it.

Take Care in Breaking the Rules

No single rule works in all situations, and there’s a time and a place for everything. Choosing what to wear can be tricky, so if you decide to go outside the lines or do something different, do it with care and accept the consequences. You may set a new trend!

Any look you choose should reflect the theme of the party and make a statement. You should be elegant, but comfortable, so you can enjoy the party, socialize, and have a great time.
