With natural hair being a major trend for 2016, achieving healthy tresses has never been more important. So, of course, that is what we are going to be chatting about today. The number one essential? Be sure you are reaching for quality products! While there are definitely many budget-friendly options to choose from on the market, it is important to remember that you often get what you pay for! If you aren’t 100% sure about making the jump when purchasing a new hair care product, read reviews and do your research. The worst that is going to happen is: you are not going to purchase said product! But it is important to consider your options, rather than running to the cheapest alternatives (which can often be damaging for your hair).
Healthy Hair Commandment #1: Choose Quality – Yes, as mentioned before you are going to want to seek out quality in your hair care products. That is not to say that some of the budget-friendly options are not fantastic, but the age old saying of “you get what you pay for” reigns so true in the beauty industry, so it is important to take the time to compare different products, and read up on the results.
Healthy Hair Commandment #2: Heat Style Less – Natural hair is not like the “no makeup” makeup trend (which typically takes multiple products to achieve). It really means your natural hair, no intensive styling involved. The number one trick that is going to allow you to embrace your natural hair and boost hair health simultaneously is kicking your heat styling routine to the curb. If you just cannot resist the allure of your curling wand or flattening iron, simply limit it to a weekly minimum, or better yet, special occasions. I am sure you are well aware of the damage heat can cause to your hair, so be sure to style responsibly!
Healthy Hair Commandment #3: Don’t Believe All of the Hair Care Trends – It seems like there is always something new hitting the internet when it comes to hair care trends (here’s looking at you, reverse washing). And while a lot of them are actually pretty dang amazing, the truth is there is no way to predict whether or not it will do your hair some good. Just because your favorite gossip site tells you to start conditioning your hair before you shampoo does not mean it will work for you. If you spot a trend you’d really like to try, don’t be afraid to ask your hair stylist their professional opinion before giving it a go!
Healthy Hair Commandment #4: Your Hair Deserves Some Extra Love – If you notice your strands are not as lustrous, soft, or frizz-free as you’d like them to be sans-product, don’t be afraid to find one that works for you. Argan oil products have maintained their popularity for many years with good reason, they are fantastic for giving hair the nourishment (and thus, softness and shine) it craves. Not a fan of argan oil? Don’t fret, there are tons of different treatment options on the market! Simply talk to your stylist ☺.
Healthy Hair Commandment #5: Find Your Hair-Washing Happy Place – It seems like washing your hair once every week (and supplementing with dry shampoo) has become all the rage these days. But much like the latest trends (see commandment #3) you need to feel this one out for yourself. Some people do just fine washing once a day, while others do just fine washing once a week, it is individual and totally based on the condition of your skin. Just like skin, one person can lean oilier than another, and thus, need to wash more often. The most important thing is to not allow dry shampooing to replace your hair washing routine. With the exception of a select few dry shampoos, most formulas start to dull and weigh hair down with excessive use, and they most certainly do not actually clean your hair!
