Yesterday I had the pleasure to attend a conference held by Donald Potard, the founder of the Jean Paul Gaultier house, regarding luxury, myth or reality? We all know that luxury is a reality, from bags and shoes to cars and yachts, but what makes the difference between regular bags and luxury bags, same quality?
In my opinion? The human nature…
Mister Potard, held a wonderful speech about the 10 qualities of luxury, and why people crave luxury items in general.
Frustration and the desire to belong to a certain social group, now I understand why every “girl” around the block buys fake Louis Vuitton bags. But why I would want to belong to that social group? If you walk around certain parts of Bucharest, I bet you’ll see more than a dozen monogram LV Speedy bags, Chanel 2.55 many Prada, Gucci, D&G items and so on.
Mr Potard spoke about luxury as an education too, and in my opinion you can observe that in purchases. When you want only branded items, and by branded mean the logo in “your face”, you want people who don’t know fashion that well to recognize your bag, for an instance. Because almost everyone knows the double c’s and the LV monogram but not everybody can spot a Balenciaga, a Mulberry, a Loewe; and they all are considered luxury brands.
It isn’t all about the fashion and creativity, I loved that he spoke about the business/economics part of luxury too, and as you know that’s my field of study so I can relate somehow. Why the Hermes Birkin is so famous, because there’s a long waiting list for it. The supply doesn’t meet the demand; people “battle” over the highly overpriced few pieces.
We don’t need luxury items, they aren’t a necessity, but we want it.
Still, I’m kinda frustrated because I don’t have a Mulberry bag.I don’t even want a Hermes belt anymore, I saw it on too many people and it lost its charm, Chanel & Louis Vuitton are out of the discussion…Though the emboss LV’s are really cute:)
Luxury items, if everybody has them, what’s the point in getting some? And why AW, for example, isn’t considered a luxury brand, eventhough the prices are high? It doesn’t have a history.
ps: hope I got it right, it was in french and my french isn’t that good..
ps2: read Ioana’s post too.
"luxury is the necessity that begins when necessity ends" 🙂
I really like this topic and your take on it 🙂
Very interesting query, darling!

I wanted to go to that conference so badly! So good that you went 😀
Of course, when you have money you want something luxurious because you afford it, and some people because of that become snobbish. I don't care about the brand, I care about the design and functionality. It can be the most wanted bag, shoe, skirt but if I don't like it, it doesn't matter at all to me.
i loove that !
please follow xoxo !
great post! i prefer discrete luxury, not the in-your-face kind, with large, visible logos.. and especially the LV-print has become so overused it's become tacky..
oooh! this is lovely. i like your side on it. very cool.

Pai daca vorbim de parfumuri care nu se mai fabrica, al meu era "Aquawoman" de la Rochas. Mirosea demential si nu inteleg de ce nu l-au mai fabricat?!
Very good. Great post sweetie
Urasc cum oamenii, atunci cand vor sa apartina unui grup social cumpara falsuri ale unor branduri.
Great post! WE definitely don't need luxury, but for some people (me included) its nice to have it! :)SarahD
great post girl! :*
wow sounds like a great lecture!
Great post – it's funny how our desires overtake our actual physical need for things!
Oh, and the shoes I want are the ankle booties with the golden platform and heel shaped like a branch…

How interesting. I definitely don´t have an attraction or have been educated in luxury. Thank God!

another example: the refusal of Prada to have a collaboration with H&M (more exactly, the reasons why they refused)
i like your post. i also attended the event and i found it very interesting.
I've decided recently not to spend money on anything I don't need, so no luxury for me in the future 🙂
