Nells left a comment on “Made in…buying for the label” and here’s a part of it:
„Today i came across this girl at work who was holding a real LV tote bag round 1000euros…she was probably on a first date and i think she expected her date to pay the bill…when he paid only his share…she turned red and was completely embarrassed..turns out all she had was 5 euros…!!”

Thinking about the girl’s perception, I can’t stop to wonder, would you spend all your money on a designer piece rather than be able to pay for your own meal? Maybe she thought that the guy would like her more if she had an LV bag? I guess he believed she had money to pay her share if she affords high eng bags.

I don’t even want to imagine the embarrassment she went through, even though she kinda deserved it. I’m being mean, I know, but why she went out if she hadn’t money, with this kind of behavior I don’t agree.
Expensive items don’t make you better than someone else, and spending money without limit either, especially when you remain penniless afterwards.
I calculate my money to the last cent because I really hate it when I’m broke, and by broke I mean like the LV girl and I hate to loan money. Debt it’s like an evil leprechaun hanging around you.
Remember what happened to Rebecca Bloomwood? She spent and spent and spent again, money she didn’t have. I know that this is an imaginary example, but I’m sure there are many people in her shoes.

That’s on the large scale; however there are many Zara blouses waiting to be bought, many Topshop sandals waiting to be worn and many LV bags waiting to be carried. And I think they don’t worth it, if they make you go through this kind of situations.

“A man will never love you or treat you as well as a store. If a man doesn’t fit, you can’t exchange him seven days later for a gorgeous cashmere sweater. And a store always smells good. A store can awaken a lust for things you never even knew you needed. And when your fingers first grasp those shiny, new bags… oh yes… oh yes. “

  • I too calculate my money till my last cent, even though I sometimes spend my last cent on a fashion magazine or a piece of clothing ;)) but whenever that happens I stay indoors or go out for a walk:)

  • You know when I was younger i would spend my last bit of cash on clothes and earrings….I would out with my friends at the mall with the cutest outfit on but be starving when everybody else went to chic-fil-a….now I'm a little smarter about spending…but I totally related to this story

  • This is SO true! I used to spend all my money on clothing, makeup, etc. just get a coffee until I get home…now, I know better. Proper budgeting and living within your means is so important! Great post!

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog — I hope you have a wonderful weekend 🙂

  • great post – i completely agree! spending more money than what you have is the worst – and i know from experience that having a credit card is a bad bad idea, at least for me… it's just too easy to use it, and then you have to pay interest for ages if you can't pay the whole bill right away.. to me, it's just really not that important to carry a brand bag or wear designer clothes – but i'm sure i will, when i get older and can afford it. for now, though, i'll rather save the money so i can at least buy my own meals.

  • Ah, men vs. shopping. The eternal question, no? 😉

I just wanted to pop over and thank you for entering the giveaway for my Karma Cards on the Daisy Chain blog. We have a few sets left if you're still keen! (cough, shameless self-promotion, cough) 😉

  • Spening more than what you can afford to is beyond stupid but I can't say that if I had to choose between a meal and a gorgeous tote I wouldn't choose the tote. 😉
I guess we're all shopaholics deep down inside, right?
    Xx

  • I like managing my money so that I get to use them as wisely as I can. Clothes aren't more important than food!

  • very interesting post. i do wonder though, what do you think about going on a date & the guy not wanting pay for the girl? is it now the norm to go dutch? i'm never sure what the right thing is with this.

  • True, but I think even us "poor" deserve a LV if we save hard for it. After it is bought we can go back to our typical lifes with something extra nice, I say this as I own a genuine LV my self and from time to time and really broke (as we student get). Yes, she shouldn't have gone to the dinner, but no, she most definitely deserved the LV and the joy that it gives.

  • if i know i cant afford it, ill get a fasshion magazine to satisfy mythirst and the rest on saving.. but sometimes it dun work and i kinda get the cheaper version of some clothings. it really irritates me tho when i see the mannequin so lovely; the movie shopaholic kinda hassle thru my brain with the mannequin calling on me. scaryy.

    Saying hi from mexico!!

  • I'm including people who will save it seriously if you want something, but if money is collected, I actually would pleasure to use.

  • The quote you used to end this post is just perfection! Honestly, one of the reasons why I never buy designer is because the prices are so exorbitant; and I always worry that, sometime down the line, I'll need some extra cash for something truly important, and I will be broke because I splurged on something I probably didn't need.

    Wonderful post!! 🙂

  • i am pro money management and totally against having to go through embarassing situations because of inconsciusness…

  • I can't stand girls that wait for guys to pay their bill. I like independency more 😀 I think she had it coming 😉

  • Did she buy the bag for the first date? I mean, I have three LV bags. None of which when I was single could have afforded. If I ever had to go back to being single I would still use my LV bags but probably wouldn't have the money to buy dinner.

  • Great post. We're always bombarded with media that encourages shopping, and it's hard for some people to really take stock of their financial situation and what they can and can't afford.
