How did you get started fashion designing?

When I was about six or seven, my mom put me in sewing lessons with a bunch of my friends. All of my friends hated it and quit- but I loved it and continued. The idea of being able to create something truly original- that no one else had- was really motivating and exciting. Throughout high school, I began to experiment with pattern making and gradually started creating original pieces. In addition-when I was about 13 I was scouted at a local mall and began modeling extensively. Through modeling, I was able to work directly with established designers, and showrooms, and stores- and gained invaluable hands-on industry experience. While in college, I started getting custom order requests from friends and strangers who’d stop me on the street- so I decided to pursue the idea of creating my own label more seriously.

Your designs are wonderful and feminine, where do you get your inspiration?

I’ve always been a bit of a romantic- always obsessed with
fairytales, make-believe, and fantasy. I try to convey that sense
of fun and idealism in my pieces, while still keeping them real and
wearable. I like to describe my designs as modern-day “princess” ensembles- elegant and regal while maintaining a sense of timelessness. Because I studied film production in college, I’ve always taken huge inspiration from period pieces and movie costumes. Some of my favorite movies are my greatest inspiration- including Gone with the Wind and all Hitchcock films. I think of Fashion as the art form that best allows for self expression- so I’m always inspired to give a personality to each piece. You can always change the way you feel and how others perceive you by changing your clothing- kind of like playing a character in a movie.

Tell us more about The Siren Collection

The Siren Collection gets its name from both the silver screen sirens of the 40s and 50s, as well as the mythical sirens in Green Mythology. I’ve been hugely inspired by water, vintage full-skirted silhouettes from the 50s, and a palette of aquas, pastels, retro brocades, and hints of metallic.

Who are your ideal customers?

Hands-down, my ideal customer is the girl who wants something uniquely beautiful-and who appreciates classic, ultra-femme silhouettes and shapes combined with modern textures. My pieces are very distinct and stand out- and my ideal customer is someone who isn’t afraid to be the center of attention and command every eye in a room! I love color, bold prints, and unique fabrics- and I prefer to experiment with colors and textures instead of avant-garde shapes. I design for the girl who wants to transform herself into modern-day royalty.

Do you have a favorite piece?

I don’t really have a favorite piece- I love everything and I’m constantly designing to update my dream wardrobe! But, my most successful piece has definitely been the Lavinia Dress. It’s my take on the classic Little Black Dress. While I normally prefer color, I feel like I managed to still capture a unique and un-mistakably feminine dress- but in black. It also works for a variety of occasions-which is why I think I’ve gotten such a positive response and the most requests for it.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?

I hope my clothing line can become a label that has something to offer every woman. While my designs tend to be ultra- feminine, you don’t have to be ultra-feminine to wear them. My hope is that the unique style I try to capture in my designs appeals to women with all sorts of diverse personal styles. Fashion should be fun to wear, and I create my garments with that idea in mind.
